Bring your own device (BYOD)

At Asquith High School we have a BYOD program, where students can bring their own laptop to utilise while at school. These are the specifications a laptop must meet to work effectively at school.

Devices and Operating systems

  • Chromebook (latest Chrome OS version)
  • Windows Laptop (Windows 10 or Windows 11)
  • Apple Macbook (MacOS 12 or newer)

NB: Android, iphone, and Linux devices are not supported at Asquith High School.

Internet Browser

  • Google Chrome

This is autmatically installed on all Chromebooks, but it is requested if your child has a Windows or an Apple laptop that you install Google Chrome onto the device before bringing it in to be connected to the Network.

RAM and Storage

  • Chromebook - 32GB Storage and 4GB RAM
  • Windows and Apple Laptops - 128 GB Solid State Storage and 8GB RAM

Screen Size and Keyboard

  • Minimum 11" screen
  • Must have a physical (not screen based) keyboard

Battery Life

  • A minimum of 8 hours of battery life is required so that the device lasts the whole day

Wireless Connectivity

Devices must support the following:

  • 5GHz 802.11 in or 802.11ac or 802.11ax standard
  • WPA2 Enterprise security

Devices with only 2.4ghz support will not be compatible with the school's WiFi network and not allow connectivity. Please ask the vendor if the device is 5GHz compatible, or contact the school for advice.

Additional Considerations

  • A case or cover to protect the device from unexpected drops
  • A lightweight device to make it easier to carry
  • Insurance in the event the device is broken or lost
  • Extended warranty to reduce possible repair costs in the future
  • Computer life expectancy is 4 years (not including physical damage, or wear and tear). This means that students entering year 7 may require a new device when they enter their senior years.

All students and parents/carers are required to complete the AHS Technology Charter and BYOD User Agreement before students can use their device or access technology at AHS.  A copy of this agreement will be sent by email to all incoming students and their parents/carers and must be completed electronically prior to their commencement at AHS.

Equity Loan Access Agreement is for students and families who are not in a position to purchase their own device. This document must be completed and returned to the school if a loan laptop is required.

Have a question about our school's BYOD requirements?

Purchasing a device for your student to use at school can be confusing and stressful. If you require further assistance in selecting a laptop for your child, we invite you to contact the school for additional guidance.
