Habits of Mind

At Asquith High School, we embed the Habits of Mind philosophy into everyday teaching and learning to help students develop the skills they need to succeed at school and beyond. These habits focus on how students think and learn—encouraging behaviours such as persistence, flexible thinking, problem-solving and striving for accuracy. By explicitly teaching and modelling these dispositions, we support students to become confident, independent learners who can respond positively to challenges.

Our approach is informed by the work of leading Australian educator James Anderson, an accredited Habits of Mind practitioner, who supports schools to meaningfully integrate these skills into the curriculum. At Asquith High School, this means creating a learning environment where students are encouraged to reflect, take responsibility for their learning, and build the capabilities needed for future pathways, in line with the NSW Department of Education’s focus on wellbeing, engagement and success for every student.
